What is Holistic Life Coaching?
Coaching as defined by the International Coach Federation is:
"A professional partnership between a qualified coach and an individual or team that supports the achievement of extraordinary results, based on goals set by the individual or team. Through the process of coaching, individuals focus on the skills and actions needed to successfully produce their personally relevant results." Translated, coaching a collaborative partnership between two equals (one trained) that is based on a commitment to each other and to the client's success in their personal goals.
Wellness Coaching (or Holistic Life Coaching) is a specific type of coaching that focuses on all aspects of wellness, Mind Body and Spirit. In this specific type of coaching, Dr. Clairborne looks at how imbalance in any of the 12 main areas of life may affecting or blocking your ability to achieve the life or health goals with which you are having trouble. As she coaches you on your specific issue, each of these areas is touched upon giving you a greater awareness of yourself, your strengths, and your areas for change.
What to Expect During My Coaching Sessions
The first session is the assessment. Generally, there will be some type of questionnaire (in our case it is the Wellness Inventory) which will assess your goals, values, and aspirations. This gives us a starting point. During that first session we establish goals, ground rules, and timelines. It's important that these be set early in the process to foster a trusting and safe environment for both parties going forth.
During subsequent sessions, the client leads the session, looking to the coach to help them deepen in certain areas of "stuck-ness". The coach is there to guide the client through reflective questions and feedback down the path that the client already knows but just needs a little help seeing.
What Coaching is NOT
Coaching is not therapy.
Coaching is not about fixing people's emotional problems. In fact, most
people who hire a coach do so because they already have some emotional
and spiritiual awareness of where there health is. They may recognize that
there is a block and that coaching my help them to push through whatever
block may be holding them back from their goal.
Coaching is not just pleasant conversation.
Although conversations in coaching sessions can be fun,
a coach's job is to help you move forward in a way that's in
keeping with who you are and what you want. The goal of coaching
is to facilitate a deep learning and lasting change. So the coaching
conversation should be both relevant and resonant. Both the coach and
client should always attend the session ready to work.
Coaching is not about giving you all the answers.
In fact it is just the opposite. A good coach will ask
the right questions to stimulate your consciousness so that
you become more aware of the blocks that may be keeping you
from you goals, as well as the solutions that may push you
through to furthering your success. While a coach may pose
probing questions and give gentle suggestions or assignments
that help you move forward toward your goals, he or she does not
give advice on what you "should" or "should not" do.
